Juniper: Colored Pencil

So, normally my favorite medium is hard pastels but I have been wanting to work with colored pencils for a while so why not start now.

This is a picture of my cat, Juniper. I started by gridding the pictures and working on the preliminary drawing. I am working on the darker colors first.

Finishing the Heart Necklace

I was so motivated that I finished my first drawing. Yay! I like to add  a background as I work on the main object because the background color tends to help me clean the edges of the object.

Shadows always help a drawing look more realistic.

The chain was the most difficult part of the drawing because of the tiny details. I like to go back with Prisma colored pencils to fix some of the small detail.

A good start…

I decided to start a little early on my new year’s resolution to create at least one piece of art per month. One of my favorite mediums to work with are pastels, particularly Nupastel’s hard pastels. I am feeling a little rusty but it started to get a little easier as I worked. The pastels in the plate are the colors I am working with to match the colors of the necklace pendant. The key to pastels are layering and mixing colors. I am using a warm paper color to help contrast the cool colors of the heart pendant.

Love colors.

You can see a mechanical eraser as well as a kneaded eraser. One thing I learned from a fellow student in art school is that you can blend colors with the kneaded eraser. It is great when you need to blend small detail.
